Prof Baris Akin is a world-famous academician and MD Professor of Surgery living in Istanbul, Turkey.
After completing medical school and general surgery residency at Ankara University, he was graduated from the transplant surgery fellowship program at Ohio State University Program between 2001 – 2004 which is one of the top ten centers for kidney and pancreas transplantations in the USA.
He participated in 270 kidney transplantations, 260 laparoscopic donor nephrectomies, and 55 pancreas transplantation procedures during his studies at the Ohio State University. He received “the Young Investigator Award” in 2004 at the American Transplant Meeting. He especially focused on advanced laparoscopic procedures of kidney transplantation. He was certified by the American Society of Transplant Surgeons as a licensed transplant surgeon to practice kidney and pancreas transplantation in the USA.
In 2004, as MD Professor of Surgery Prof Baris Akin returned to Istanbul and initiated one of the first kidney transplantation programs at Florence Nightingale Hospital in regards to the organizational scope at Ohio State University Transplant Program. He performed over 1200 kidney transplantations during his studies in Turkey with a 97.8% first year, 92.1% five-year success rate. His program especially offers an active blood group incompatible kidney transplantation and paired donation program for international couples. He performed the first laparoscopic hand-assisted donor
nephrectomy procedure in Turkey. He created a brand new donor nephrectomy surgical technique (retro-peritonoscopic hand-assisted technique) which enables decreasing the risk of abdominal organ injuries and abdominal adhesions. He performed retro-peritonoscopic donor nephrectomy in over 1000 cases since the year 2009 and presented his surgical experience at international meetings in the USA and Europe. adopted himself to training in the national and international arena. He has been a faculty forESOT’s LIDO course since 2016 and Hesperis Course in 2019.
Prof Baris Akin Chaired International Transplant Network Courses and Meetings since 2017. Currently, he is the Vice-Chair at European kidney Transplant Association(EKITA Board) of the European Society of Transplantation(ESOT) and Turkish delegate for transplant surgery at the European Union of Medical Specialists(UEMS) He is the General Surgery Professor and director of kidney and Pancreas Transplantation Program at Demiroglu Bilim University Florence Nightingale Hospital in Istanbul. He is also the director of a referral center for the Vascular access forhemodialysis program at Istanbul Florance Nightingale Hospital.
