ABO blood group incompatibility or pre-existing donor human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies (DSA) are major barriers to live-donor kidney transplantation, ruling up to 54% of otherwise appropriate pairs. All guidelines offer paired donation as first plan in these patients.
A paired kidney exchange, also known as a “kidney swap” occurs when a living kidney donor is incompatible with the recipient, and so exchanges kidneys with another donor/recipient pair.
Paired Exchange program enables two incompatible recipients to receive healthy and compatible kidneys and decreases costs and infectious complications. More importantly offers longer graft and patient survival.
Florence Nightingale Kidney Transplant Center has been performing paired kidney exchanges for years. All medically eligible donor/recipient pairs from all around the world may participate in our paired kidney exchange program. A two-way kidney exchange occurs when two donor/recipient pairs exchange organs for a better compatibility match. In more complex cases, three or more donor/recipient pairs may be included in Exchange.
We perform spontaneous exchange meaning; All couples have Surgery at the same time.
Our program offers increased chance to find a match in shorter time because Turkey has one of the highest rates of living donor kidney transplantation on the world. In addition to our citizens waiting for a pair, we have several applications from other countries around the World. Our advanced tissue typing laboratory and numerous patients referred are offering a good chance for you to find the well matching couple at our paired exchange program.
Paired donation program can enable to find a suitable match immediately or in a couple of months’ time for couples who are blood group A to B or B to A. Recipients who are blood group O with non O donors may have longer time to find a suitable match.
