Prof. Dr. Barış Akın: Leading in Transplant Surgery with Experience and Innovation

Education and Specialization:

• 1995: Graduated from Ankara University Faculty of Medicine and obtained the ECFMG certificate, authorizing him to practice medicine in the USA.

• 2000: Completed the General Surgery Programme at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, becoming a specialist in General Surgery.

• 2004: Completed his clinical fellowship training in organ transplant surgery at Ohio State University.

• Received the certificate of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and continued to work as an organ transplant surgeon in the USA.

Work and Awards in the USA:

• Performed 250 kidney transplants and 280 laparoscopic kidney removals during his time in the USA.

• 2004: Received the “Young Investigator Award” at the American Transplant Congress.

Return to Turkey and Contributions:

• 2004: Returned to Turkey and has since performed over 1500 kidney transplantations.

• Achieved results comparable to the world’s most successful centers in his own practice, contributing to the training of dozens of transplant doctors and coordinators from Turkey and abroad.

Developed Techniques and Surgical Innovations:

• 2009: Developed the “endoscopic hand-assisted retroperitoneoscopy” technique, offering a safer camera surgery method for kidney donors. He has performed over 1400 cases using this technique.

• He is also one of the first practitioners of the “Robotic Retroperitonoscopic Surgery Technique” globally.

Training and International Contributions:

• Trained numerous surgeons at his center and participated as an instructor in national and international courses on kidney transplantation.

• Notable contributions include supporting the European Transplant Association’s live kidney donation training course since 2016 and chairing the International Transplant Network organization’s training courses seven times.

• Published several important articles in international journals.

• Contributed to the initiation and development of kidney transplant programs in various countries, such as the University of Baku in Azerbaijan, Mediclinic in Dubai, Higea Hospital in Albania, Military Hospital in Senegal.

International Responsibilities:

• Holds significant international responsibilities, serving as the President of the Kidney Board of the European Society of Transplantation (ESOT) and the representative of the European Union of Transplant Surgery (UEMS) in Turkey.

Prof. Dr. Barış Akın is now sharing all his extensive experience at his new center as of 2025, accompanied by the latest medical advancements and new computer program to increase paired donation. Alongside comprehensive kidney transplantation and post-transplant services, he will also proceed surgeries with his expertise in vascular access surgery and general surgery. At his new center, he continues to provide high-quality and accessible healthcare with a patient-centric approach.
